Vijay Mallya: Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has got a big setback from the Supreme Court. The court convicted him in the 2017 contempt case. The Supreme Court has sentenced Vijay Mallya to four months' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.2000. The Supreme Court has asked Vijay Mallya to deposit $40 million with interest within four weeks. If he fails to do so, his properties will be attached.

Court had reserved the decision

Let us tell you that Vijay Mallya is accused of being involved in the Rs 9,000 crore bank loan scam involving his Kingfisher airline and has been convicted in the contempt case. A bench headed by Justice U U Lalit pronounced the verdict on Mallya's sentence.

Justice Lalit, Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice P.S. Narasimha had on March 10 reserved its order on fixing the quantum of sentence in the case and observed that there can be no progress in the trial against Mallya.

However, Mallya's counsel had said on March 10 that he was paralyzed as he had not received any instructions from his UK-based client and was unable to stand his (Mallya's) side regarding the period of sentence to be awarded in the contempt case. I am helpless. "We have been told that there are some cases going on in the UK (against Mallya)," the bench said.

He said, we do not know, how many cases are pending. The issue is that as far as our judicial jurisdiction is concerned, how long will we be able to go on like this. The apex court had fixed February 10 as the date of hearing, citing the long time given to Mallya and gave the fugitive businessman a last chance to appear in person or through his lawyer.

Mallya was convicted in 2017 for contempt and the matter was to be listed to determine his proposed sentence. The apex court had dismissed the revision petition filed by Mallya in 2020 for reconsideration of the 2017 verdict. The court found him guilty of contempt for sending $40 million to his children's accounts defying court orders.
