Infosys Allowed For Gig Work: U-turn of this big company after layoff, employees will be able to do temporary work with jobs

Moonlighting: 'Gig' has not been defined by Infosys nor has it been defined as 'Moonlighting'. This decision was taken by the company at a time when there is a debate about 'moonlighting' in IT.


Infosys: Information Technology (IT) company Infosys has allowed employees to do other temporary work along with the job with the prior consent of the manager. However, such actions must not be competitive with the Company and its customers or cause conflicts of interest. In the information sent by Infosys to the employees, it has been explained in detail that how the employees can do temporary work on the basis of 'Gig' i.e. contract.


Debate erupts in IT industry over 'moonlighting'

Analysts say the move may help the company overcome some of the challenges like leaving the job. This allows the employees to get an extra source of income. Infosys, however, did not define 'gig work' nor did it refer to 'moonlighting'. This decision has been taken by the company at a time when there has been a debate in the IT industry regarding 'moonlighting'.


Company sent e-mail to employees

Let us tell you that when an employee does any other work in addition to his regular job, it is called 'Moonlighting'. Earlier, the company had clarified that the company does not support 'moonlighting' and has fired two employees in the last 12 months. The company said in an e-mail sent to the employees, 'Any employee wishing to do other work may do so in his personal time with the prior consent of the manager and BP-HR. Provided that it should not be in competition with Infosys or our customers.


Infosys said that these actions should not affect their ability to work effectively with the company and it will be the responsibility of the employees to ensure that. "As per the Infosys employment contract, employees may not work in areas where there is an actual or potential conflict of interest or dual employment," the company wrote in response to an emailed query. Significantly, Infosys is one of the companies that has taken a tough stand against 'moonlighting'.
